SAFETY
The development and implementation of highly automated driving systems in accordance with SAE J3016, Level 4 requires the careful use of suitable processes and methods for safe and effective operation. A growing framework of various existing and new standards and regulations is currently emerging for this purpose. The following standards are, among others, decisive for European manufacturers:
These requirements govern how automated vehicles are approved and demand, among other things, a precise description and determination of the relevant operating conditions and necessary capabilities of the vehicles and systems (ODD), a verifiable safety argumentation and defined test methods [Reg. (EU) 2019/214][Reg. (EU) 2022/1426]. This is complemented by regulations of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) [UNECE_155][UNECE_156].
At a technical level, a comprehensive set of standards must be taken into account, including:
For validation, approaches proposed within the UNECE New Assessment/Test Method (NATM) framework are increasingly gaining acceptance. It combines four pillars: audit, simulation, drives on test tracks and in real traffic [UNECE_FRAV/VMAD].
Building on these developments, standards and regulations, ROBERTA develops and implements an evaluation and assessment methodology to ensure safe pilot operation and to prepare the long-term, sustainable deployment of the buses in Austria.
